It’s a concept that most of the guests say, there’s nothing like it, anywhere. It started with a conversation between friends about bringing beach volleyball to Oklahoma, but there was one major problem: there are no beaches in Oklahoma.

“Are we really about to go do this in Oklahoma City,” said Andy Burnett, developer for Boombox Beach volleyball.

After a lot of planning and research, and the creation of the perfect sand, two months ago, the team opened Boombox, an indoor and outdoor facility for beach volleyball.

“In the middle of January when there’s an ice storm, you can be on the sand playing beach volleyball. In the middle of August, when it’s one hundred and fifteen degrees, you can be on the sand playing beach volleyball,” said Burnett.

“All different skill levels, from recreational, social leagues to competitive adult leagues,” said Lee Chartier, developer for Boombox Beach Volleyball.

A great form of exercise, no matter what the skill level or age.

“Whether you’re twelve or whether you’re sixty-two, the sand is easy on your body. You can still play into your sixties, seventies,” said Burnett.

And no matter how competitive, or how many falls there is one constant, plenty of smiles

The team also intentionally included outdoor courts

“The outdoor courts are a requirement for NCAA, college competitions, and junior competitions and professional beach volleyball,” said Chartier.

And no matter how competitive, there is always plenty of fun and smiles

“We want this to be a place where everyone feels welcome and can come and learn the sport and see how fun the sport is,” said Burnett.

There are also cornhole boards, ping pong, and a beach-style café. The Boombox is centrally located on NE 63 and MLK, just off Eastbound I-44, making it accessible from every part of the Oklahoma City metro area.

Check their website or Facebook page @boombox for upcoming specialty classes and events, as well as for team tournaments and open court times.
