A suspect in a high speed chase is out of jail on bond Thursday.
All hands were on deck in Pottawatomie County on Wednesday when a pursuit turned into a standoff along I40 near the Grand Lake Casino.
Authorities say it started as a domestic dispute around 9 p.m. and eventually turned into a car chase through the streets of Shawnee. The suspect led officers onto I-40 where he crashed into a center median.
"It's dangerous but its part of the job," Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Palmer said after the collision the suspect, Jose Reyes, refused to surrender," he immediately stuck a gun to his head."
For more than an hour and half, law enforcement agents tried to convince Reyes to put down the weapon.
Reyes threatened to end his life because he had a fight with his girlfriend.
"You try to say the right things and try to keep them at an even temperament," Lt. Palmer explained the stress that came with negotiations.
Reyes allegedly told officers he did not want to harm them.
"He said he didn't want to hurt any of the officers and he didn't want the officers to shoot him. He just wanted to do it himself, " Lt. Palmer said.
Lt. Palmer said himself, other Pottawatomie County Deputies, Shawnee Police and tribal officers became more concerned for Reyes safety than their own.
"It's a situation where you hope for the best and we accomplished that," Lt. Palmer said.
Reyes eventually gave up his gun and then himself. He was booked into the Pottawatomie County Jail for attempting to elude officers. He has since bonded out of jail.
