NORMAN, Oklahoma – The Norman Tigers finished their non-district schedule with a dominant 42-6 blowout of Del City Thursday.
The Tigers (3-0) started slow, scoring once in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Zach Long to Brad Davis for a 7-0 lead. They recorded an interception deep in their own territory later in the quarter to preserve their lead, and began to pull away after that.
Long recorded two rushing touchdowns to give Norman a 21-0 lead at halftime, and Arkansas commit Donovan Roberts added a touchdown run of his own in the third quarter to increase the advantage to 28-0.
Del City's offense continued to stall, but the Eagles (0-3) finally got on the board thanks their defense. Sheldon Abernathy jumped in front of a pass for an interception at his own goal line and sprinted 100 yards the other way for a touchdown.
But the Eagles' celebration was short-lived, as Imond Robinson returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown to bring the lead back to 35-6 at the end of the third quarter. Norman added one more touchdown in the final frame for good measure to complete the rout.
Thursday's outcome continued trends for both teams. Norman had only one close game in non-district play, while Del City has been unable to keep offenses out of the end zone. The Eagles gave up 141 total points in their first three games.
Both teams will begin district play next week, with Norman facing Sapulpa and Del City taking on Edmond North.
