NORMAN, Oklahoma – Police in Norman have arrested a woman suspected of using a child to scam senior citizens out of money and jewelry.
Officers arrested Pamela Summer Stephens Friday, Sept. 10. Police say Stephens – along with a little girl she called her daughter – would go to homes in Norman and ask for a drink of water or to use the restroom. Police say when the homeowner left Stephens alone, she would steal jewelry, checks and medicine.
Stephens lives just a couple of doors down from the victim in the case, and just around the block from Tresha Brock, another one of her alleged victims.
"That's the girl who identified herself as ‘Summer' that came to our house," said victim Tresha Brock, who identified Stephens when she saw her mug shot. "I was just astonished to find out how many of our neighbors she had actually been to, how many she had stolen from, and pulled this same identical con on."
Although police released information about the scam and the suspect's description Monday, they arrested the 30-year-old the previous Friday. Police say since sharing details with the public, they've identified more possible victims.
"We've had more than a dozen tips, including information of course which I can't release regarding the children possibly involved in this," said Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley.
Stephens was booked into the Cleveland County Jail. She faced several charges, including grand larceny and writing bad checks. Police said she passed several checks at a Norman bank and pawned the jewelry at a local pawn shop.
Detectives are continuing their investigations into Stephens suspected involvement in several other very similar incidents that occurred over the past few months.
Her bond has been set at $1,000. Police say because the bond is so low, they're worried Stephens may get out of jail and continue the scam. They're urging people to take a good look at her picture and stay aware.
"She didn't show a lot of remorse," said Capt. Easley. "So that's why it's important for people to be aware of it, because she might pay you a visit."
