New England snow knocks out power, shuts schools

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- It may be less than a month before spring arrives, but northern New England is getting a reminder that it's still winter.
   A storm that dumped wet, heavy snow has left more than 140,000 homes and businesses without power, forced cancellation of classes at hundreds of schools and created a mess of the morning commute.
   The storm arrived late yesterday in Maine and New Hampshire and dumped heavy wet snow overnight, snapping tree limbs, utility lines and utility poles. Several towns in western Maine reported getting two feet or more.
   And there doesn't seem to be any relief in sight. Heavy snow is still falling across most of Maine this morning, with some places reporting rates of three to four inches per hour.
