Edmond police have identified a man who was shot and killed after he threatened officers with a gun Wednesday afternoon.

Jenny Monroe, a spokesperson for the Edmond Police Department, held a news conference Thursday afternoon and identified the suspect killed as 24-year-old Garrett Sandeno.

During the news conference, police also presented the weapon Sandeno was carrying during the incident.

According to Monroe, at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, a woman called police saying her husband, later identified as Sandeno, was suicidal because she had just told him that she was leaving him. She said there were guns inside their house and that Sandeno had attempted suicide before.

The woman said she left the home after her husband pulled out a gun and told her he was going to kill himself. She went to a family member's home and called police to check on his welfare.

Two officers responded to the neighborhood and saw a man matching the suspect description in the 1700 block of Ridgecrest Road. He was walking around the area with a gun at his side.

Police said the officers gave Sandeno multiple verbal commands to drop his weapon. When the officers were threatened by Sandeno with his weapon, one officer fired two shots at Sandeno, hitting him one time in the chest, Monroe said.

Sandeno was transported to the OU Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer who shot Sandeno has been placed on paid administrative leave. Monroe said that officer has been with the Edmond Police Department for 15 years and had no prior incidents. She said they will not release the officer's identity until he's been interviewed by investigators.

Edmond police said they are continuing to interview several witnesses, including one who was at the intersection during the incident.
