Two people were killed and three are still missing after a tornado swept across the city of Van, Texas, late Sunday night.

Two people were killed and three are still missing after a tornado swept across the city of Van, Texas, late Sunday night.

During a news conference Monday morning, authorities confirmed that 43 people were taken to the hospital to be treated, and that 30 percent of the town has been damaged.

Authorities said three school buildings, including an elementary school building, intermediate school building and administrator building, were damaged.

Van is about 70 miles southeast of Dallas and just one of several north Texas communities hit by tornadoes over the weekend. News 9's Justin Dougherty is in Texas and said there is "significant damage" to homes after severe weather hit the small city of Van. 

The National Weather Service received a report of a tornado near Van, in Van Zandt County, as severe thunderstorms passed through Sunday night.Van Fire Chief Jeff Hudgens said the city sustained "some significant damage" to "multiple homes," and said agencies are responding to confirmed injuries. 

Van is about 30 miles northwest of Tyler, Texas.
