A handful of schools chose not to walkout and keep classes open on Monday.  Cushing Public Schools is one of the districts to make this decision.

People in Cushing say the schools are doing well.  They have a new football field, a new middle school, and more growth on the way.

Don Amon, an Assistant Principal at Cushing Middle School, says that, even though school is still in session Monday, the district fully supports the teacher walkout.

Amon says there are mixed emotions among Cushing teachers this week.

“I think there are a lot of teachers here that would’ve been happy to go down and spend the day in the city, but I also think there are a lot of teachers here that said, ‘Hey, you know what?  We’re doing okay,’” said Amon.

“We’re very fortunate in Cushing, very fortunate.  But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to support those people that aren’t as fortunate.”

Amon points out that this movement isn’t new.

“In fact, this is probably the first year that I haven’t gone,” stated Amon.  “I’ve gone down to the capital, goodness, close to 15 years.”

However, Amon says he’s glad to see the change coming.

“I think, finally, the silent majority decided to speak up a little bit,” said Don Amon, assistant principal at Cushing Middle School.

A statement from Cushing Public Schools says the district sent delegates to the capital.  The statement also says, in part, “we fully support educators across the entire profession and are optimistic about the future of education.”

Amon says he hopes the recently passed teacher pay raises are just a great start to an even bigger movement to fully fund public education in our state.
