The Better Business Bureau wants to warn you about puppy scammers across Oklahoma.
Kitt Letcher with the BBB said they’ve seen a peak in puppy scam calls in the last two weeks and many of these victims are left without thousands of dollars.
The worst part of it all is that "the dog typically does not exist. they're selling a fake dog," Letcher said.
Letcher said it’s important people make sure you do a reverse search of the puppy you're trying to buy. Oftentimes, these puppy images are just stock photos.
"You should call the breeder, talk to them in person,” Letcher said.
Letcher also said be wary of paying upfront, watch out for additional shipping and insurance fees.
"People are being charged all along the way and they're typically out thousands and thousands of dollars,” Letcher said.
The best thing you can do is actually shop locally when buying a pet so you can see that the pet actually exists.
Another great option is adopting or fostering a furry friend.
"There are a ton of dogs out there that need a home,” Letcher said.
