The upgrades are front and center at Del City High School, new field turf for this fall and expanded seating construction is underway. Along with the new features, Del City is taking big steps in another department: recruiting. Thanks in part to a cell phone camera.
Two Eagles standouts – Donovan Stephens and Kanijal Thomas – both hold a handful of division 1 offers. But as of seven days ago, Thomas didn’t have any offers until head coach Mike Dunn sent out a video from his phone.
“Memphis was his first offer, Coach David Glidden from Memphis, an old Mustang grad, played at Oklahoma State,” Dunn said. “He called me Tuesday night and said I want to be the first to offer, I really liked the kids film, I really got to see his body type, he said when I saw that video it was a no brainer.”
“At first it was like wow, and then they started coming and coming, it’s amazing, I was happy, I was really-really happy, I was excited. I told my mom and everything,” Thomas said.
Stephens is also noticing the positives.
“He's helped me out a ton, he's boosted my recruiting a lot, he's done wonders for me, helped me get scholarships, showing coaches how I can move and how big I am,” Stephens said.
Even when COVID-19 clears, Coach Dunn will continue to share -- to make sure college coaches nationwide know all about Del City football.
