Norman City Council passed an ordinance Tuesday night that will temporarily mandate face masks in public places as Oklahoma reached its largest single day spike in COVID-19 cases.

The temporary ordinance would be in place for public places with some exceptions. Children under the age of 6 years old would not be required to wear a mask. Also, anyone with specific health issues.

At this time there is no specified penalty, but some individuals could face a trespassing fine for refusing to wear a mask in private businesses.

The City of Norman believes a lawsuit could be filed in response to the ordinance.

The ordinance takes effect immediately. The council could revisit the decision in the next 30 to 60 days.
