An Oklahoma prison is closing, which will force the state to move hundreds of Oklahoma inmates to other facilities.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections said the Cimarron Correctional Facility in Cushing is closing. It's privately operated by CoreCivic with 1,650 beds.

The ODOC is working with a nearly $25.5 million budget decrease.

It said in negotiations it offered to reduce the number of beds in three privately-owned prisons by 500. The ODOC said it believes that would have allowed privately-owned facilities to stay open, but Cimarron Correctional decided to close.

ODOC didn’t say when the facility will close but said staff will start transferring inmates from Cimarron to other prisons soon.

The ODOC said it will continue to house inmates at CoreCivic's Davis Correctional Facility in Holdenville.
