Pottawatomie County deputies are investigating a homicide near Wanette.

Sheriff Mike Booth confirmed that the suspect, Jake Ryan Nelson, confessed to the murder of his father.

The investigation began Monday as a missing person's report.

Deputies said the case seemed suspicious because there was a large fire, and witnesses said they saw Nelson leaving the scene.

"We had witnesses that saw him on this dirt road on his tractor and asked him what was on fire. He said, 'don't know don't care,' kept on going," said Undersheriff Travis Palmer.

Within hours, the case turned into a homicide investigation after deputies found a burned body in a pile of hay.

Nelson was already in custody.

He was detained by deputies, who said that he broke out a window in their patrol vehicle and was later arrested.

Once he was questioned by the undersheriff, Palmer said he eventually confessed to killing his father.

"This morning we sent a team back out here and then an interview was done. The son did confess that he shot and killed his dad then backed the hay baler on top of him, stacked the hay on it, and set it on fire," said Palmer.

A team of bone specialist from Tulsa have been called to the scene because the body was badly burned.

The motive has not yet been released.

Officers and family friends told News 9 on the scene that the suspect suffered with drug addiction.
