This holiday season there will be more empty plates than ever before as the effects of COVID-19 continue to reverberate through our most at-risk communities. That’s why Feed the Children, a leading nonprofit focused on alleviating childhood hunger, is kicking off its annual No Hunger Holidays campaign to raise awareness about childhood hunger while providing hope and joy throughout the holiday season.
The nonprofit is asking volunteer groups (athletic teams, church youth groups, professional organizations, clubs, etc.) to help pack boxes of food and essentials which will be delivered to thousands of struggling families in Oklahoma and across the United States. To ensure volunteer safety, Feed the Children’s distribution center is sanitized weekly and the organization has implemented social distancing and mask requirements.
For volunteer Deby Fabrazzo, helping distribute food and household items provided perspective during this pandemic and made her grateful for what her family has.
“My husband and I have three teenage children. We haven’t worried about food insecurity and we’ve been very healthy,” Fabrazzo said. “This has served as a reminder that we have so much to be thankful for. We have obviously never been through a pandemic before and this experience has been a very eye-opening one.”
Fabrazzo added “from my perspective, what we can offer the community is hope. This is a tangible way that we can make a difference during a time that feels really hopeless.”
During the holiday season alone, Feed the Children will deliver food and essentials to its community partners, providing more than 1.2 million meals to struggling families.
For parents like Kim, the No Hunger Holidays campaign provides critical food and household supplies for her and her two daughters. She works hard to keep the heat on, pay the bills, and put enough food on the table to feed her family during the holidays. It's not always easy and sometimes, sacrifices must be made.
"There are times my children will eat first, and I go without a meal just to make sure they're okay," she shared. "But how long can I continue doing that?" Through Feed the Children's network of community and corporate partners, as well as all the individuals who make gifts to help at-risk families, Kim and her daughters will have a happier holiday season. "I barely had food in my cabinet when Feed the Children came and knocked on my door. Now I have a cabinet full of food."
