Tulsa Public Schools will now be able to help non-English-speaking parents through a Spanish support line where families will have access to professional interpreters.
"We want to empower them with the tools and resources they need to be able to engage in their child's education, regardless of language," TPS's Community Service Manager Maricarmen Mitchell said.
37% of TPS students speak a language other than English at home, and Spanish is the most common, according to the district.
With students doing distance learning because of the pandemic, the district hopes this new service can bridge the gap with families.
The phone service connects an interpreter with parents to help answer questions about their child's education and COVID. The interpreters will also be helping teachers relay messages to their non-English-speaking students when they need to connect with them.
TPS Community Service Manager Maricarmen Mitchell said in the past, hearing an interpreter through the phone has made parents a lot more confident reaching out to the district.
"We've seen the response," Mitchell said. "We are seeing that parents are participating."
If you or anyone you know need Spanish assistance, you can call the support line at 1-844-490-0120.
