Police in Shawnee are working to piece together how human remains ended up in a forested area on the outskirts of town.
Investigators said they're left with more questions than answers right now.
"They were walking in the woods and they found some bones," said Shawnee Police Department Corporal Vivian Lozano.
The grim discovery was found around 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The remains were found by people walking in a wooded area on private property, just south of Brangus Road and Independence Street.
The people who discovered the remains called police. Shortly after arriving, investigators determined the bones were human.
"They did find a long bone, which was one of the leg bones. I'm not exactly sure which one and then they did find a skull," Lozano said.
Police don't know if the bones belong to a man or woman, the cause of death or if they're investigating the death as a homicide.
Right now, their investigation depends on what's found by the medical examiner.
"It's a waiting game right now until the M.E. can get back with us," explained Lozano.
Lozano shared where police might begin their search to find who this person is once those results come back.
"The detectives will probably start looking into missing person reports and kind of go from there," Lozano said.
As of now, it's not clear when the medical examiner's investigation will be complete.
