Carnegie Elementary School in Tulsa has canceled in-person classes on Thursday, August 26 and Friday, August 27 due to staff absences.
A Tulsa Public Schools spokesperson said the sudden closure was due to an unanticipated staffing shortage. Notification to the parents went out shortly before the start of the regular school day. Parents who didn’t get the message, and arrived at the school, were alerted by administrators at the doors. The building remained open Thursday morning. The district did not immediately report how many teachers were absent.
In a letter issued to parents, school Principal Krista Blanche said that students are still eligible to receive breakfast and lunch meals free of charge. The meals can be picked up at the Ross Child Nutrition building located at 8934 Latimer Street. Parents looking to pick up meals for their students must schedule an appointment ahead of time and can do so by phone at (918)-833-8670 or by emailing cns@tulsapublicschools.org.
According to Blanche, in the event a longer cancelation is anticipated, families will be given the opportunity to pick up Chromebooks and chargers for their students.
School officials say that parents will be updated about plans for classes on Friday, August 27 no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday.
