Students at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City are learning new skills and getting to show them off for the school.

It’s a broadcasting program, for the students and by the students, teaching them ins and outs of broadcast news.

“We don’t get this many opportunities, especially being on the east side. I’ve been over here my entire life and you don’t see this many opportunities, and if you do, they don’t stay here that long,” said Amyah Morgan, a Douglass High School student.

The program gives students a chance to produce a news program called Douglas Trojan.tv.

“Every student will do every aspect of the business, so they will understand whether being in front of the camera or behind the camera or on the set-up team, so they’ll understand what the process is like,” said Marcus Carruthers, the program organizer.

Students are not only learning new skills, but they’re also finding a new confidence.

“It’s like when I get on camera and I’m doing these interviews, it’s just like I’m a whole different person. It brings me out of my shell more,” said Morgan.

The students have the opportunity to interview faculty and alumni of the school, giving the students a connection to the past and pride in what they have accomplished.

“I mean, you have anywhere from NFL players to senators, and I know, pretty soon, we are gonna have funeral directors that have come through Douglass,” said Douglass High School Principal Kevin Jones.

The program is shown on television monitors throughout the school and also teaches them the responsibilities of being in the spotlight.

“They know that they have to be a person of character. They know that they have to make good choices and good decisions in the classroom, outside the classroom,” said Carruthers

Opening up a world of possibilities that many of the students had never considered.

“Like a sports analyst like Steven A. Smith or one of those, and talk about sports,” said Logan Holmes, another Douglass High School student.
