Former Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick is helping to bring part of a decommission nuclear sub to Oklahoma City.
“I got a chance to be a part of the commissioning ceremony,” said Norick.
Norick was talking about July 9, 1988, when USS Oklahoma City was commissioned into service.
“The mess hall in the sub was called Cattleman’s,” Norick said.
The former mayor said that's where crew members would end up when visiting in Oklahoma City to the learn about the sub’s namesake.
The 362-foot nuclear sub is now being decommissioned, but part of it will be forever immortalize above the water.
“We've requested that we get the sail, which is the part you see sticking out of the water and put it on static display,” said Norick.
He isn’t sure on the final location of the sail.
Meanwhile, plans of including the sail and a full size replica of the sub's hull at a park are still being explored.
Norick thinks the sail could be coming our way by the end of next year.
