The Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma are getting a $20,000 grant from Google to support its STEM programs.
The money will go toward programs for Girl Scouts in Kindergarten through 12th grade
Leaders with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma say the money is instrumental in helping their STEM initiatives and are excited to see how they can improve the program
The money will help bring in more resources for troop leaders, so they can expand their teaching of STEM topics for the girls.
Currently, the Girl Scouts offer 145 STEM badges for all levels, which include science, robotics, coding and much more.
STEM strategist Jaime Walton says it is vital to get girls exposed to STEM at an early age since most of them decide by middle school if they want to pursue a career in it.
Walton says this grant can bring them one step closer to bringing more female representation into STEM fields.
“So often, our young girls only see male representatives in those careers, so we start them off early and introduce them to a variety of STEM concepts," Walton said.
The Girl Scouts have a robotics competition in Tulsa on Saturday. Leaders say they hope to have even more STEM events in the future.
