April starts the beginning of Child Abuse Prevention month. To raise awareness, pinwheels were placed in front of the Parent and Child Center of Tulsa. CEO Melanie Anderegg said each one of the 2,624 pinwheels represents a child who was abused or neglected.

"We are trying to create a visual because sometimes when you just have a number, 2,624, what does that look like.. this is what it looks like," she said.

She said this number shows there's a significant number of child abuse in the county, and there could be even more cases that haven't been reported.

"Reach out, help us, help us protect those children, help us provide families with resources, help us bring awareness to this awful tragic situation," she said.

Anderegg said child abuse and neglect is something that impacts the entire community, and it's up to everyone to do what they can to stop it.

"If we have our community members aware of what's going on, there's no wrong door for a child to be able to reach out for help," she said.
