A mock crash in Hominy teaches students a tough lesson about what can happen when people drive drunk or distracted. They put on the crash as they get into graduation and prom season.
First responders don't want to see any teenagers lose their lives. That's why they go to so much trouble to drive home the dangers of impaired driving.
You could hear the sirens from all over town as agencies rolled into Hominy Middle School. First EMS, then police, fire, and state troopers, all to respond to this mock crash as middle and high school students get a front row seat.
"We try to make it impactful for them," said fire chief Coby Surritte. Chief Coby Surritte said it was important to show kids exactly what goes into working a horrible scene like this.
In the mock scene, senior Joseph Eaton acts as the drunk driver with two passengers, while someone in the other car is dead and another has to be flown to a hospital.
"I'd hope someone looks at it and says 'oh I don't want to drink and drive or get in the car,'" said Joseph Eaton.
To really drive it home, a hearse drives up and firefighters roll a stretcher past students. "You don't realize until a tragedy occurs how very serious this is how close to home this hits," said Mary Hammer.
Mary Hammer and Melanie Johnson worked with Hominy crews to make this all happen. They hope this mock scene today will stop it from becoming reality tomorrow.
"If something that happens to you, what's your siblings, parents going to think," said Sarina Graham. "That's how I think when I get behind the wheel."
"If we can save one little life, it's all worth it," said Surritte.
Hominy's prom is next week, and the agencies wanted to do this before kids think about drinking and driving.
