More than a thousand motorcyclists rode from Bricktown to the Edmond Police Department in honor of Sergeant C.J. Nelson.
Sgt. Nelson was killed last week when a man in a truck ran into his motorcycle while on duty.
Bruce Robertson met Sergeant C.J. Nelson around ten years ago.
“I met him attending the Edmond police civilian motorcycle school. He's taught literally thousands of guys like how to ride and be safe,” Robertson said.
Robertson said he's been to several of Sergeant Nelson's classes. He said he's probably attended more than 30 classes he taught and the lessons he learned will stay with him forever.
Over time, he said he became a great friend and mentor.
Robertson said when he heard Nelson was killed in a crash. He was overwhelmed with emotion.
“Shocked and crushed. Just a horrible thing to happen. Kind of wrong place, wrong time. Just really sorry it was him,” Robertson said.
Eric Spencer with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office agrees. He said the color of someone's uniform doesn't matter; they're brothers and sisters in blue.
“Honestly, the first thing I felt was anger. You know it's due to neglect, in one form or another, and then the sadness kicks in and then you start worrying. 'Oh that could've been me. It hits home',” Spencer said.
Bikers said this ride is about raising awareness.
“Back the blue is life. It's a livelihood to me,” Spencer said.
They prayed for healing and rode in remembrance of his sacrifices.
