Meals on Wheels built a new wheelchair ramp for a 97-year-old Broken Arrow veteran.

Piece by piece, the volunteers used their own hands and hard work, to help someone in need.

The 48-foot wheelchair ramp is for World War II veteran Emmitt Starr, with the goal of making his life a little easier.

"I never used one, but it would probably make it a little better," Starr said.

Meals on Wheels first heard of Mr. Starr's struggles from his daughter who said her dad had been falling more often and was having a hard time getting to doctor's appointments.

He's a Meals on Wheels client, so Lauren Orr said this ramp was just a small thing they can do to help someone who served our country.

"It's such a nice feeling," Orr said. "I can't even do everything I would want to do for a Navy veteran that spent his time serving our country. This is just something small that I can be a part of."

Orr said Meals on Wheels just moved into a new building because the number of people who need help is growing.

"I get those calls weekly....just of concerned family members knowing that we're just one call away," Orr said.

Several volunteers from Home Depot along with Meals on Wheels employees helped build the ramp.

Jonathan Vanbeber with Meals on Wheels is also a veteran. For him, this project was special.

"As a veteran myself, it's kind of a very touching and emotional event to be able to help a World War II vet," Vanbeber.
