Tulsa Firefighters are going door-to-door to install smoke detectors for people who need them in a neighborhood where a woman was killed in a fire on Monday.

The fire happened near Admiral and Memorial.

Andy Little with the Tulsa Fire Department says TFD responds to approximately 2000 fires a year.

He says unfortunately, some of those fires turn deadly.

"It's tragic anytime we see someone lose their life in a fire," Little said. "We know four out of five fire deaths occur in homes, often times at night. Two thirds of those homes usually don't have smoke detectors."

On Tuesday, firefighters knocked on doors, offering to install and fix smoke detectors at the same neighborhood where the fire happened.

Little says firefighters and The Red Cross are going to at least 200 homes around the area.

He hopes this will spread awareness to the importance of working smoke alarms in the house and that if every home had just one of these, countless lives could be saved.

"If we can get that smoke detector going off to alert you early in the fire stage, you can get out safely and quickly, and potentially save the lives of your family," Little said.

Little says after this most recent fire, they want to make sure no one else in this neighborhood goes through the same thing.

"Because it's such a tragic situation, we can talk to those neighbors and say we don't want this to happen to you, and we can help prevent that," Little said.

Little says If you are in this neighborhood and were not home when firefighters were here, you can call the number 918-596-9422 and firefighters can help install a smoke detector.
