Investigators arrested Tarell Smith, 30, after taking him to downtown headquarters for questioning.

Police said the shootout left one person in critical condition, and a second victim is expected to live.

An employee at a convenience store at Northeast 63rd Street and Spencer-Jones Road called 911 just before 8 a.m.

“The caller at the store said there were multiple shots fired in the parking lot,” Lt. Isaac Goodman with the Oklahoma City Police Department said. “And that they have locked their doors and customers were taking cover inside the business.”

An officer responding to the scene was nearly hit head-on by a truck driving the opposite direction near Northeast 63rd Street and I-35.

“He turned around to stop that truck,” Goodman said. “Turned out it was two victims shot at the scene by the convenience store. They were trying to get to the hospital by themselves.”

While the shooting victims were rushed to OU Medical Center, officers set up a crime scene around the victim’s truck and a second scene at the store.

“We do not believe this to be a random act of violence or robbery,” Goodman said. “But a shootout between the victims and the outstanding suspect who were acquainted with each other.”

Crime scene investigators collected evidence at the shooting scene, and officers went searching by foot and by air for Smith.

“They are following up on potential addresses where the other outstanding suspects may be,” Goodman said.

Officers found Smith around noon on a property a couple miles from the convenience store.

Smith was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
