A locally-owned business is making waves in the biomanufacturing realm.
Utopia Plastix is a metro company that creates a resin used to make products similar to plastic. It is used to make bags, single-use utensils and more.
James Bradley, the Vice President Of Operations for Utopia Solutions, said the difference is it's biodegradable and better for the environment.
"What we do is provide and alternative for your polypropylene plastics and we can also be used to make the products eco-friendly," Bradley said.
For Utopia founder, Sharina Perry, having headquarters in Oklahoma just made sense.
"Due to my entrepreneurial career, to perhaps have a presence in Oklahoma to re-write how industry looks like in Oklahoma for African American business owners," Perry said..
Perry said right now the state doesn't have the infrastructure to entirely support a company like Utopia Plastix.
"We were also focused on single use plastic, there are not a lot of single-use plastic manufacturers in Oklahoma," Perry said.
The innovation district and companies like Utopia Plastix are looking to change that.
"I do feel like it is a place we can come to and build a place of biomanufacturing. That we could now establish a global presence. And manufacturing also was a part of Black Wall Street," Perry said.
Perry said their goal is equitable opportunity for all Oklahomans.
"That we help everybody, as many people as possible, have access to resources. That we have access to what we need to help build back our future better," Perry said.
