A community came together to honor an Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office deputy who died days after he was critically injured in an accident.
Deputy Jeremy McCain, a 36-year-old single father, was serving as a school resource officer when the accident happened.
Monday, McCain’s comrades gathered outside OU Medical to take him home.
Deputies, officers, friends and family lined up outside the hospital as a procession of law enforcement made the one mile journey to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Oklahoma Christian School Resource Officer was critically injured when a gate pierced his windshield, breaking his neck.
Since the night of his accident the eleven year veteran continued to defy all odds, thanks to the help of strangers, prayers, and doctors.
“It's truly a miracle that he is still with us, Jeremy died three times that evening,” said Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson.
In addition to his family and friends, and as he clutched his son's favorite toy. McCain, a beloved school officer, was surrounded by the parents and leaders of the school in which he worked and loved.
“He knew all the kids’ names in the elementary, I think there are 500 kids? He knew their names, that's not just somebody coming in punching the clock, that’s someone, it's a calling, I love this, I love you,” said Johnson.
McCain, a single father leaves behind a young son.
“Jeremy means everything to his kid. And I think it's a lot to be a cop and devote your life to this community and service, but also to have someone who needs you this much,” said Johnson.
