A community is leaning on each other after a neighbor was gunned down inside a condemned home in Shawnee.
The shooting happened in Dunbar Heights, a neighborhood rich in history.
“We take pride in saying we know your grandmother and your great grandmother, and we know everyone you’re related to,” said resident Shirley Campbell.
“We had fun, we played talent show, church. We did everything on south Philadelphia and for this to happen in our neighborhood, it’s scary,” said resident Schelby Moore.
Dunbar Heights residents were startled by what unfolded down the street.
“There were police cars everywhere, detectives, a crime scene, people sitting in the curb, obviously something transpired,” said Campbell.
“We didn’t even know about till I seen it on FB,” said resident Marianne Cook.
According to police, Terry Bryan, 31, was shot dead inside the condemned home.
“The most horrifying thing for me was to see the body bag come out,” said Campbell.
Police arrested Nathan Kadayso, 19. He’s accused of shooting Bryan in a home where neighbors say several people were squatting.
“There’s always going to be concern whenever there is vacant property, because it tends to attract the unhoused, and with that comes a lot of issues,” said Campbell.
Neighbors and church members are now coming together for all those involved.
“That’s the question that haunts us is why, sometimes we never understand why, but we can show compassion and care,” said Pastor David Henry.
Residents said they hoped the senseless crime would bring awareness to dilapidated properties.
“We should not take life for granted. Was this an isolated incident? We’d like to think so. But I do hope that they would tear this house down, it has to go, it has no place here,” said Campbell.
