Crews To Begin New Streetscape Project In Downtown Sand Springs

Sand Springs is working on improving the downtown area this summer, and it's starting with a new streetscape project. The first phase of the project is taking place on the east side of Main Street between 1st and 2nd before it will move over to the west side of Main.

The project comes from a general obligations bond back in 2018, and the city has since worked with local businesses to figure out how best to improve the downtown area.

Sand Springs will work to beautify downtown, and some of the new things that residents can expect to see include new landscaping, pedestrian and vehicular lighting, a new crosswalk, and even some power outlets which would help with festivals and other events in downtown Sand Springs. While phase one of this project will take about 120 days to complete, city leaders say that the work will be worth it.

"In the long run, it’s really going to help them out, so I think that’s really where they are excited about it just as much as we are. I think that even with a slight disruption, it’s not going to be as big of a hindrance as it might come across to be in the first few months," Chloe Haroldson, Sand Springs' Special Events and Marketing Manager said.

Haroldson also believes that this new project, once completed, will bring in a lot more foot traffic to downtown, which will in turn help out the local businesses.

"I mean that’s a huge factor that goes into it is getting people to come down here, walk around, and see the businesses and really treat it like a small town in the community that we've really built here," Haroldson said.

Phase one will likely be completed sometime in August. Haroldson also said that the next phase would see work move up towards to the triangle, but that won't start until a later date.
