People in Quinton in Pittsburg County are upset after the Board of Trustees fired the police chief and city administrator at the same time.
Mayor Carey Gregg says the city is planning to reallocate funds for economic development and the two positions don’t meet the city’s demand.
With a population of 850 people in Quinton, the city says it’s ready for growth.
Mayor Gregg says in order for growth to happen, he has to make tough choices.
“The board as a whole come together and come to the conclusion that we relieved a couple of employees and it was for the good of the town.”
Former City Administrator Connie Stockton says the budget had nothing to do with the city’s decision, but she doesn’t feel like the board gave her a straight answer.
"It’s communication. Nobody communicates with anybody. That is one thing that I can tell you that we did. We communicated while I was down here,” Stockton said.
After the board let the chief go, the remaining officers and reservists resigned, leaving the town without its police force.
Mayor Gregg says there aren’t any plans to hire a new chief at this time.
Mary Kilcrease previously served on the board of trustees.
She says this doesn’t make sense, because the city cannot generate revenue without local law enforcement.
“There were some months they were writing $14-15,000 worth of tickets, that's revenue they were bringing into the town. Now that’s gone,” Kilcrease said.
Pittsburg County Sheriff Chris Morris says his department will cover law enforcement for the city.
Former Quinton Police Chief Kevin Kirk says the city’s decision is disheartening.
He released this statement:
“Even in this unfortunate time, I am still grateful to be given the opportunity to put my best effort forward to such a great place. Everyone in Quinton matters a great deal to me. I am honored to have been able to meet such amazing people and have the opportunity to work with and get to know some of the best people in this state. I hope nothing but the best for the town and will pray for their prosperity.”
