A former student of Cascia Hall Preparatory School is now one of the newest graduates of the United States Naval Academy.
Lewis Guillory is a 2018 graduate of Cascia Hall. He says he is honored to walk in the steps of so many before him and serve in the United States Navy. He recognizes this achievement is not only meaningful to him, but to his Grandmother, as this answered her prayers. His Grandmother didn’t get a chance to graduate from college. When she had his dad, she prayed for her children and grandchildren to get an education.
Guillory earned a degree in political science from the Naval Academy. He says it's an honor to be commissioned as an officer into the United States Navy and join the team that secures our nation's border.
“It’s amazing joining the legacy of men like Wesley Brown who was the first African American to graduate the Naval academy which was a task in it of itself. Then woman like Janey Mines the first black female to graduate from the naval academy. It was amazing to walk across the same stage in a similar ceremony they had”, Guillory said.
One of his favorite moments on graduation day was his brother, Payton, giving him his first salute as an officer. Payton is in JROTC at Booker T. Washington High School.
“It’s Tulsa born and raised. Tulsa is in my blood. It got me through the academy. Had I not been where I was growing up, I wouldn’t have gotten through this place. That 'at home' feel really got me through those tough times", Guillory said.
Guillory says this achievement would not be possible without the support of his parents. This fall, he will head to Pensacola, Florida, to start flight school. Eventually, he plans to attend law school to work in policy making.
