The Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Medical Assistance Program has issued a warning about a scam that’s going around about Medicare fraud, mainly on COVID-19 test kits and self-catheter kits.
COVID-19 test kits are no longer available for free due to the end of the Public Health Emergency, but scammers have been taking advantage of Medicare beneficiaries by charging and sending at-home tests that were never requested, according to the department. Beneficiaries also said they have seen charges on their summary notices for tests they have not received.
The department has reported over 55 calls in relation to this issue.
Medicare recipients also reported that urinary catheters were being billed when they don’t have a diagnosis that requires those certain medical supplies.
The department said to contact them immediately if they suspect any Medicare fraud or abuse. They can be contacted by calling 800-763-2828 or by clicking here.
Medicare allows claims to be submitted up to 12 months after receiving an item or service receipt.
Medical Assistance Program Director Ray Walker said the following in a press release about the scam:
“Unfortunately, the pandemic provided fraudsters with many opportunities to take advantage of Medicare beneficiaries to benefit themselves. We are actively working with State and Federal partners to detect and fight these new, emerging scams.”
