A grenade was found Monday morning in a Yukon backyard, prompting an investigation and restricted access to a nearby middle school.
Yukon Police said they responded to a report about a suspicious device found in the backyard of a home near East Vandament Avenue and Cornwell Drive.
When police arrived on scene, they found what appeared to be a hand grenade, according to police.
Officers immediately secured the area, and Yukon Public Schools was contacted about the incident, which caused Independence Middle School to restrict access for cautionary purposes, police said.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol bomb squad was contacted to investigate and neutralize any potential threat.
After an investigation, the grenade was found to be inert, and the bomb squad ensured a safe disposal.
Police said there was no point where community members and officers were in danger.
Police ask residents to be cautious if they see any suspicious or dangerous objects nearby. Police said to not touch an object that could be hazardous. Instead, immediately contact your local law enforcement agency.

This morning, the Yukon Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious item found in the backyard of a residence located in the 1200 block of Glenwood Drive. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered what appeared to be a hand grenade.
The safety of our community members is of paramount importance to us, and our officers took immediate action to secure the area and ensure the safety of nearby residences. Yukon Public Schools was also contacted about the situation and Independence Intermediate School was restricting access for cautionary purposes.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb squad was contacted to assess the situation and neutralize any potential threat that may exist. After careful examination, it was determined that the grenade was inert and the bomb squad will ensure of it's safe disposal. At no point during this incident were any community members or officers in danger.
The Yukon Police Department would like to remind residents to exercise caution when coming across any suspicious or potentially dangerous objects. If you encounter an object that you believe could be hazardous, do not touch it or attempt to move it. Instead, immediately contact your local law enforcement agency.
