A Cleveland County deputy was arrested early Wednesday after he was accused of shooting and killing his wife, authorities said.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Vaughn Cannon shot and killed his wife, Jordan Cannon, who is also a deputy with the sheriff’s office.

Oklahoma City Police said they were called to the scene of a domestic disturbance and possible shooting near Southwest 29th Street and Brookstone Lake Drive.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Jordan dead, and police said she appeared to have been shot to death.

Vaughn stayed at the scene and was arrested and taken to the Canadian County Jail on a murder complaint, according to police.

Investigators said they learned the couple were in a heated argument when the shooting happened.

Cleveland County Deputy Shooting: Sheriff's Office Press Conference

The sheriff's office held a press conference Wednesday afternoon providing updates to the deadly shooting.

“This act not only robs us of a dedicated and courageous public servant, but also shakes the foundation of the community in which she served,” Sheriff Chris Amason said in the press conference.

Jordan began her career with the sheriff’s office as a school resource office on June 7, 2021, before she moved to the patrol division, the sheriff said. She was also a Crisis Intervention team member and a member of the county’s Honor Guard.

The sheriff described her as “a ray of sunshine with a smile that could light up the room.”

Vaughn was terminated from the sheriff’s office Wednesday. “We’re shaken to our core… I’m going to be honest, I'm pissed off. I’m mad at him for taking her life,” Amason said.

The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office also released the following statement:

We mourn the loss of one of our own.
"We are all heartbroken. Jordan was a ray of sunshine with a smile that could light up a room. She loved being a deputy sheriff and had a heart for serving others. This is a difficult time for everyone involved, but we will get through this together. I have called in our peer support group, counselors, and our chaplain to help our employees and community get through this difficult time."
- Sheriff Chris Amason
This is something no one can begin to prepare for, we ask for your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this devastating event within our Sheriff's Office and Community.
Oklahoma City Police Department has released information on this incident, as it is their ongoing investigation.
