Investigators spent the day Thursday gathering evidence in a shooting that killed one person and injured another. It happened Wednesday in an area neighbors considered safe, along 149th Street.
“Most of us have children, we have kids,” said Justine Henphill, who has lived on this road for five years. “Most of us don't lock our doors at night, you know, this is what type of road it is. We're not worried about that type of stuff.”
Until Wednesday just after 4 p.m., when the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office started a homicide investigation at a home just down the street.
“It's concerning now, most certainly everyone is on high alert,” Henphill said.
Investigators say one person was shot to the death and another one injured.
“Out here, this is no place to come kick-in a door, you know. For us who don't have dogs, we all have guns,” Henphill said.
Henphill said she doesn’t know the man who lives in the home, that he kept to himself. She also said she didn’t hear the gunshots but saw someone running from the scene. Investigators said two others involved were located at the Sooner Country convenience store just five miles away. It’s here where worker Eva Helm tried to help.
“I saw a young man in the back seat on the floorboard and he was bleeding heavily,” Helm said.
According to Helm, the man who was driving told her his brother was shot.
“I'm not sure exactly what went down, but it's from what I was told it was an argument,” Helm said.
Helm said the man told her they were all acquaintances of the man who lived at the home and were visiting him.
Investigators arrived at the convenience store and were led back to the home by one of the young men. It is at the home where officers discovered the homicide.
“Everyone is locked, loaded and doors are locked up windows are locked up because we have no idea. There's never been problems, but you never know who your neighbors are,” Henphill said.
Investigators are not releasing the names of the people involved in the shooting at this time.
