Nearly 2 months ago, Demetrize Carter was shot in the chest at a high school football game. Today, a county grand jury is deciding if there's enough evidence to charge the officer who was working off-duty when he fired the gun.
"Everyone in Oklahoma deserves to be respected,” Billy Clark, Carter’s attorney, said in a previous interview with News 9. “They deserve to be protected. He deserves an opportunity to do the things he wants to do. Lawful things that anyone does."
In August, a Del City police officer working off duty, shot Carter after an altercation broke out at the Choctaw football game. "A young man was killed we get that, but you can't go around shooting the first person you see," Clark said.
The shooting prompted District Attorney Vicki Bhenna to ask a county grand jury to get involved. "It's citizens in whatever jurisdiction you're in,” Clark said. “There's usually a random selection of people."
According to the charge to the grand jurors filed last week, they convened on October 16th. The document reads '...You will now go to your jury room and proceed...'
News 9 continues to press for answers, but the name of the officer who shot Carter has not been released yet. However, the officer's attorney, Gary James, said in a previous interview that his client is not at fault.
"It is a very justified use of deadly force,” James said. “He didn't comply."
Court documents also say the grand jury's investigation is confidential, and releasing any information at this time is prohibited.
