A Pottawatomie County man called 911 after investigators say he used an axe to commit murder.
According to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office two calls were made to 9-1-1 Friday night that reported the crime. The initial call, which prompted a response to a trailer home east of Earlsboro, was made by a hysterical man who investigators said discovered the victim.
911: He's on the ground lying here bleeding to death. He needs an ambulance, quick!
The frantic callers told dispatchers he found Charles Rogers badly injured. He was lying in a driveway next door.
911: He's moving, he's moving, he's breathing. Please hurry.
The caller told dispatchers, that Rogers was suffering from multiple injuries, and that he believed his brother, Felipe Wright, Jr. was responsible for the attack.
911: My brother came outside with an axe. I didn't know what was going on.
Pottawatomie County deputies and first responders raced to the mobile home, but it was too late. “Paramedics were on scene and ended up calling it, pronouncing him dead on scene,” said Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Dinwiddie.
Investigators were searching for Wright when he called 911.
Wright: Something really bad happened. And I’m sitting on a bridge.
During the call to 911, Wright told the dispatcher he'd been struggling with addiction,
Wright: I've been trying to stay sober at mom's house, go to work, stay off the dope. I couldn't do it.
Wright told the dispatcher exactly where investigators could find and arrest him.
Wright: I guess I’m just going to walk into Shawnee and turn myself in.
Investigators located Wright walking down I-40. He was arrested for the murder of a man investigators say he didn't know.
Rogers had been house-sitting for a friend--when his life abruptly ended. “He deserved to live a long healthy life and to die an old man in his bed. He didn't deserve what he got,” said Roger’s mother Tricia Stanich. With no clear motive, Rogers' mother clings to memories. “I was privileged to be his mom, I’m glad God gave me that,” said Stanich.
Wright remains jailed on a murder complaint. He has yet to be formally charged.
