Tulsa Oilers Football is getting ready for its second season. The team is holding open tryouts on Saturday, November 4th.

Linebacker, Tre Harvey, took News On 6's Alyssa Miller through a few of the drills that will test the athletes' skills.

The first is a 40-yard dash.

"Speed is probably the most famous thing in football and if you got a fast 40 time, you are going to get the coach's attention," said Harvey.

He said to do that, an athlete must know how to get set in the correct position.

"We are going to put our feet on the line, take a couple steps back, get a good base underneath us, then we are going to crowd our hands to the line," Harvey continued demonstrating saying, "Then from there, we are going to come up, hand back, and we are going to explode out."

The next drill is called a 5x10x5. Harvey said this tests an athlete's ability to change direction quickly.

Next comes the broad jump.

"You do not want your feet too wide, or too narrow, just kind of shoulder length apart and you want to swing back, and you want your arms to project you forward, kind of give you a little extra umph when you are jumping," said Harvey.

Speed, strength, and agility are all good ways to measure an athlete's ability, but he adds the coaches will also be looking at who is a team player.

"They want to see a guy who can have the right measurables, that is why we are out working on these drills, but also a guy who is going to do the right things and who is going to lead," Harvey continued saying, "We are trying to build a culture here in the Tulsa Oilers organization, a winning culture at that, and so it has got to take the right leadership to have guys come in to be a part of that to make it work."

The open try-outs are from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Titan Sports Performance Center. Registration is $65 in advance and $75 on the day of the try-out.
