State and local leaders met in Claremore on Dec. 18 to announce Rogers County has launched a tourism initiative to bring more people and money to the area.

Leaders said they are excited to make the most of "Discover Rogers County" ahead of the Route 66 Centennial in 2026.

Those leading this initiative also said they are proud to get all eight cities in the county involved.

Downtown Claremore is popular this time of year with visitors and shoppers like Talli Coursey from Broken Arrow.

"I initially came here to visit my folks, who live in Claremore, and this is just such a neat unique experience to shop in Claremore, so I wanted to swing by,” said Coursey.

State and local leaders hope a new initiative called Discover Rogers County will bring even more eyes to Claremore, Catoosa, Verdigris, Oologah, Talala, Chelsea, Foyil and Inola.

Leaders said dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act are being used to increase the region's online presence and showcase the best of the region, such as the Blue Whale of Catoosa.

Locals like Susan Gebhart, director of events for 320 On Main, are thrilled.

"To the extent that all of us can work together with organizations like this one, it really helps you to make your money go a lot further in terms of getting the word out,” said Gebhart.

Leaders said tourism is a leading economic driver for the region, with 4,000 employees in the county.

They also said this year alone, 350,000 visited the county and spent an estimated $111 million.

Rogers County Commissioner Ron Burrows said even more visitors are expected for the Route 66 centennial celebrations.

"If we can really roll out the red carpet with this sort of tourism initiative, we will grow the population that does want to grow here and raise their family and get a job,” said Burrows.
