The simple act of driving a car is one of the most dangerous things we do every day. A recent survey shows how bad driving habits can cause crashes that kill people.
People who use phones while driving are more likely to have aggressive driving behaviors and even road rage, experts said.
It's crucial to remain focused on the road while driving. You need to be able to go faster, slow down, hit the brakes and take curves.
Lt. Stephen Florea is the head of TPD's traffic unit at the Gilcrease Division. He said talking or texting on a cell phone takes your attention off the road.
Rylie Fletcher from AAA said road rage is excessive speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, and tailgating.
“Oklahoma is one of those states where people drive larger vehicles. It’s a bigger farming state. There’s a lot of trucks, SUVs. With that, those bigger vehicles cause more harm if they were to collide with another vehicle," Fletcher said.
She advises to not try to correct the behavior of other drivers, because it can just lead to more aggression and even violence.
“You may not be able to see that person in the car next to you. But they are your neighbor. They are someone in the state that we need to take care of. Make sure you’re extending them the courtesy of being a safe driver, following the speed limits, following traffic safety rules, making sure that you’re keeping them safe. Because they very well could be your neighbor," Fletcher said.
Fletcher said it's best to take a moment to breathe before heading out on the road. If you're feeling agitated, find a rest stop or somewhere safe to pull over for a while.
