One Elk City woman is turning her pain into purpose with the Compete to Defeat Brain Tumors 5k run and walk.

Storme Jones and Lisa Monahan with the Coca-Cola Porch spoke to Ciara Kilhoffer, who organized the race in honor of her parents, Patrick and Marcy Nitzel.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the American Brain Tumor Association for research.

“While it is about raising brain tumor awareness, it's also about connecting the community to health resources to live the healthiest version of yourself,” Kilhoffer said. “The race was inspired by my personal journey after the passing of my parents last year. So through those difficult experiences, God had placed it on my heart to look at the future and see how we could make a difference in the brain tumor community and for the treatments and maybe possibly have that chance to fund that one researcher that makes all the difference in the brain tumor community.”

Kilhoffer has a message for those experiencing what she and her family went through.

“There is hope on the other side of the storm and if nobody takes the time to care, nothing will ever change,” Kilhoffer said. “So if we all come together and put in our effort to fund research, hopefully we can see some breakthroughs in the future.”
