Oklahoma Nonprofit Helps Children Share Traumatic Events, Hosting Fundraiser

Children who experience traumatic events are often traumatized again when they have to tell authorities what happened, but an Oklahoma group is working to help ease that burden with its mobile outreach program.

Bill Turner with Oklahoma Interviewing Services spoke with News 9 about some of the services they provide.

Turner said they offer a mobile service that offers forensic interviews for children who are victims of or witnesses to violent crimes.

"We go out mostly to rural areas with our mobile unit, which is an RV; our interviewers and our family advocate will actually conduct the interviews for law enforcement or DHS," Turner said. "It just provides a more comfortable location for the children to tell their story because that can be so scary."

He said what these children have witnessed can be scary enough and retelling those stories can be difficult.

"We try to make that process as comfortable as possible; we have toys, we have things on the bus to make them feel more at home and, really, just try to make it easy for them to talk about what's happened to them," Turner said.

He said they help hundreds of children a year and get involved whenever a child witnesses a violent crime.

The nonprofit is hosting a fundraising event, their 6th annual golf tournament.

The event is on Monday, June 3, at Winter Creek Golf Course in Blanchard, and will have many opportunities to contribute to their cause.
