Today the Oklahoma Humane Society hosted its first ever spring dog festival, "Poochella" at Scissortail Park.
With shelters across the metro desperate for fosters and adoptions the humane society is encouraging the community to help.
"It's a one-of-a-kind event here in Oklahoma City," Mark Eby, director of Oklahoma Humane Society said. "We just wanted to do something fun for people to have a good day with their animals and remember the Oklahoma Humane Society and everything that we do."
The organization helps tens of thousands of animals a year through spay and neuter programs, as well as adoptions and fostering. The Oklahoma Humane Society depends on the support of the community.
"If you want a new furry friend, go there first to find one before you just go to the shops and stuff," Eby said.
Eby says now is the time to foster, especially with partner shelters like OKC Animal Welfare at capacity and desperate for relief.
"The only way for us to take more animals is for more people to be able to foster," he said.
"They save lives, they don't just discard the unwanted," said veterinarian, Dr. Danel Grimmett. She adopted her furry friend, Harry Potty, from the humane society 12 years ago. Today, she and Harry ran a “Smooch a Pooch” booth alongside many other vendors to raise money for the humane society.
"There's so many generous Oklahomans that give to OK Humane and we really believe in their mission," she said.
The Oklahoma Humane Society's doors are always open to fosters and adoptions and the nonprofit takes donations as well. For more information, visit their website.
