A local nonprofit organization that helps children in Oklahoma County who have dealt with abuse, has started a new program for teen girls that focuses on building self-worth.

The Care Center's Director of Mental Health, Hannah Griffis, joined News 9 on the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to discuss the need and purpose of their new program, "Making Sense of Your Worth."

The program is a support therapy group for teen girls who have been through abuse. The goal of the program is for the teens to see and understand their true value and worth.

"We want them to feel seen and heard and just have a space to share their story," Griffis said.

The eight-week program involves the teens participating in a variety of activities, which include artwork, like painting. The girls are also given a journal that they can use to write down what they are grateful for.

"There's lots of amazing research on gratitude and the way it impacts our brain. And something that I think that families can do at their home and is something that we do in our groups is just shared daily, something that they're grateful for with other people around them," Griffis said.

The Care Center is hosting an event on June 18th. The profits from this event will benefit this program.
