Scammers in Canadian County are attempting to trick residents into paying a fee for "missing jury duty," according to the county sheriff.

Canadian County Sheriff Chris West said scammers are telling people they've missed jury duty, and must pay a fee to a third party.

To avoid falling victim to the scam, West said he wants residents to take a few minutes of research first before believing anything is actually from the county.

"All those numbers are published, if you have a phone you can do a Google search," West said. "You can get on a computer or if you have a phone book… you can just call the sheriff's office or the court clerk and validate it on your own."

West said you will never be notified about jury duty over the phone, as an official document always comes through the mail.

According to the Canadian County Sheriff's Office, many of these phone scammers are transnational, who get local area codes and names to make the scam seem real.

The sheriff says it's difficult to catch these scammers because they aren't from the US.

The Canadian County Sheriff warns to never click on any links or give any personal information unless you know without a doubt who that person is.
