The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden shared that one of its Asian elephants, Asha went into premature labor on July 20 at almost 13 months pregnant. The zoo says that this resulted in the miscarriage of her stillborn calf on July 21.

The OKC Zoo says that this was Asha's fifth pregnancy.

Dr. Jennifer D’Agostino, OKC Zoo’s Chief Animal Program Officer said that sadly miscarriages are a risk for all mammals and that there is not always a reason as to why.

The zoo confirmed that Asha is back to her normal routine, and has been reunited with her family group.

Dr. D’Agostino said that following Asha’s miscarriage, caretakers gave her time to be with her calf and let her say goodbye in her own way.
