Geary students return to class Wednesday after fire at high school

Geary school officials posted on the district's website Tuesday that students will return to school Wednesday after a fire destroyed the high school gym and several other rooms over the weekend.

Middle and high school students will eat breakfast in the elementary cafeteria and then should report to the Field House for information on schedule and classroom changes.

The post said no one is allowed to go inside the high school building.

What we know about the Geary High School fire

The fire started Saturday night and burned into early Sunday morning. Geary Public Schools canceled classes Monday to assess the damage and develop a plan to complete the school year.

The fire caused the roof of the old gym to collapse and destroyed the band room, woodshop, and a classroom. The main high school building sustained heavy smoke and water damage.

According to district officials, the building was empty at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Efforts to help rebuild Geary High School

News 9 has reported on several efforts to raise money to help rebuild and recover after the fire.

Geary's volunteer fire department is collecting donations to help the school, and a woman whose siblings are part of the band program is offering photo shoots, with some of the proceeds going to help.
