As students prepare to return to the classroom in just a few weeks, an Oklahoma City social services organization says the transition can be challenging for children.
Erin Engelke, the CEO of Calm Waters in Oklahoma City, said she’s seeing an increase in children’s anxiety levels, and that going back to school can be a big factor.
"During the summer, a lot of those routines and schedules fly out of the window," Engelke said. "That's why it's so important leading up to school to start building in more of those routines."
Calm Waters says kids enjoy schedules as it provides stability, despite what children may say.
Calm Waters said they suggest fun planning-ahead activities such as picking out school supplies or visiting the school playground to lessen fear and build excitement.
Additionally, Calm Waters says children look to their parents for signs of safety, so it’s important to express confidence.
If things are getting too stressful however, Calm Waters offers a variety of free services to help children and parents through those tough times.
