Helping people suffering from addiction requires community and a place to call home. A new Oklahoma City nonprofit provides for women who need support.

Founder of Sober Vibes OKC Chelsea Williams said the community lacks resources for women suffering from addiction. Williams stepped up and put her words into action. The nonprofit renovated a home on Dorothy Drive in Northwest OKC that will open doors and possibilities for women in recovery.

“This house gives me life,” Williams said. “It was a dream of mine for a very long time. I love what I do.”

Sober Vibes OKC helps women overcome addiction and helps them find community.

“We have to fight for us,” Williams said.

Williams understands this calling because people have fought for her. Williams experienced about 15 years of substance abuse and several years of homelessness.

“I’ve got several felonies,” Williams said. “I gave up my kids.”

Williams named the new sober living house after a board member’s daughter Adria who lost her life to an overdose. Adria's photo hangs in the living room watching over people passing through the home.

“She was just shy of her twenty-first birthday,” Williams said. “It is a reminder that this is life or death,” Williams said.

Williams lost her niece Lairen to an overdose right before she opened her organization's new recovery home.

“That was our last conversation ... her moving into this house,” Williams said. “She was a beautiful soul.”

Williams honors these women through her work.

“So, nobody else has to lose their mother or their daughter,” Williams said.

Williams said healing starts with a place to go and a community ready to welcome them home.

“Peace. Whatever that may be for you,” Williams said. “There is always hope.”

Chelsea remains committed to ending the stigma around addiction. She said empathy for these woman goes a long way toward their recovery. For more resources on addiction recovery visit oklahoma.gov/odmhsas.html - Anyone in crisis can call or text 988 to connect with a trained professional.
